A Big Change Called Ijab Kabul

@ Cecep Asmadiredja

And among the signs of His (Greatness) is that He creates for you pairs of your own kind, so that you may be at peace with him; and He made among you love and affection. Indeed, in such a thing there are signs (of Allah’s greatness) for the people who think.” (QS Ar Ruum: 21).

In the above verse, Allah Subhanahu wata’ala describes with a series of verses about the signs of His greatness in this universe, such as the miracle of man’s creation, the erection of the sky without a pillar, the spread of a very wide earth, the thunder of thunderous thunder, and the fall of rainwater.

The creation of the universe and its contents, the earth with everything on it, the vast oceans, the towering mountains, the wilderness. The circulation of the sun, moon and stars as well as the rain, the growth of trees, and others, are all created by Allah Subhanahu wata’ala for human happiness.

However, Allah Subhanahu wata’ala also gives more than that. Allah is All-Knowing of all that He has created. Allah Subhanahu wata’ala knows, when man is afflicted with suffering, then man needs someone who is able to breathe happiness, peace, heal wounds, support his weak body, and strengthen the heart without pretense, prejudice and selflessness beside him.

Then Allah Subhanahu wata’ala created a lover among humans, and a sacred bond was established, called the marriage contract. With two simple sentences, ijab and kabul, there is a big change. What is haram becomes halal, what is immoral becomes worship, and freedom becomes responsibility. So lust turns into love and affection among others.

So great is the change that the Qur’an calls the marriage contract a heavy agreement. Therefore, the event of the marriage contract or ijab kabul is not a small event before Allah Subhanahu wata’ala.

The event of ijab kabul was not only witnessed by our parents, brothers, and companions, but also witnessed by the angels in the high heavens, and especially witnessed by Allah Subhanahu wata’ala.

If the above agreement is wasted, and if the promise that has been imprinted between the two spouses is then decided, then we must not only be responsible to those who were present at that time, but also must be responsible before Allah Subhanahu wata’ala.

A man is the leader in his family, and he must account for his leadership. The woman is the leader in her husband’s house, and she must account for his leadership.” (HR Bukhari Muslim)
